THE Cebu Landmasters-backed University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors are now ready for their first appearance in the annual FilOil Flying V Premier Cup, which will kick off on Wednesday at the San Juan Arena.

The Landmasters-USC however, will have its debut on April 30 yet against the Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers.

USC will be joined by Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers and the Southwestern University Cobras in this biggest pre-season tournament in the country.

“I am really happy for the players to be playing for this (FilOil) tournament because this is very big. For the players, they get to have a good exposure going to the Cesafi tournament and they will have great tune-up matches against heavyweights,” Warriors team manager and Bogo City mayor Celestino “Junie” Martinez Jr. told reporters yesterday.

As part of their extensive pre-season preparations, the Warriors showed their class by beating the GN Asturias Stars, 103-96, last April 12 at the Asturias Sports Complex.

In that game, the Warriors were trailing mostly in the opening half, before dominating the rest of the game with Congolese Toyambi Espoir controlling the middle and scoring 19 points for the Junthy Valenzuela-mentored USC. Renato Demotor and Niño Tingal topscored for GN Asturias.

“We will be sending an 18-man line-up and out from that number we will be choosing the final 15 for the Cesafi. We thank Joe Soberano of Cebu Landmasters for making this (FilOil) trip possible,” Martinez said.

Those who made Cebu Landmasters/USC lineup are Ian Bensig, Jake Cortes, Espoir, Cameroonian center Outtara Ibrahim, Christian laude, Kiefer Lim, Nico Magat, Ian Ortega, Charles Pepito, Miguel Plata, Victor Rabat and recruits Josef Rocha, Vengie Trozo, Glennson Ybanez and Dolan Adlawan.

Three more slots are expected to be filled before the team leaves for Manila on April 27.

In the Warrior’s first appearance, they will play the Vergel Meneses-coached Heavy Bombers on April 30 before taking on UV on May 2, and University of Perpetual Help Altas on May 3.

They will resume their campaign when the Premier Cup visits Cebu and Warriors will face the Cobras on May 21, the University of the East Red Warriors on May 23 and UAAP champions De La Salle University Green Archers on May 25.
