‘Play with the masters’

CEBU’S first School of Chess formally opened yesterday with GM Oliver Barbosa providing the potential masters extensive lectures and giving the Cebuano players the chance to play against a grandmaster.

CSC owner IM Kim Steven Yap was also present, motivating and giving lectures to the young and aspiring players while entertaining guests who were mostly chess luminaries and top local players.

“This is a dream come true. I just hope to we could live up to our goal—that is provide a venue for our young players and top players in their quest for chess excellence. I am very happy with how the things are turning out with our opening day,” Yap told Sun.Star Cebu.


More than 40 players, both young and old, registered to become a member of the school but only 32 participated in the simultaneous exhibition game with Barbosa.

Those who tried their game against the newly-crowned Kolkata, India International Open chess tournament champion are Patrick Vega, Louie Arsenio Tan, Gayl Bontes, Laila Camel Nadera, Duane Borgonia, John Lester Bezano, Mykha Borgonia, Jerico Zapico, James Diloy, Jerish Velarde, Edwin Cablao, Queenie Cablao, James Paraon, Adrian Basilgo, Rigel Amacua.

Peterson Sia, Romulo Pialan, Marq Gabrielle Balbona, John Francis Balbona, Felix Shaun Balbona, James Andrew Balbona, Leo Cortes, Lemuel Motero, Ronald Arnado, Partrick Von Ponce, Alphard Gonzales, Alphecca Gonzales, Jemmy Paling, Mario Bastillo, Christian Klent Pondoyo, Chris Aldritz Pondoyo and Jethro Ysmael Caparino.

Today, the Cebu School of Chess will host its first tournament—a two-day School of Chess Open, which is a 7-round Swiss System event with 25 minutes plus five seconds increment time control.

The winners will receive cash prizes courtesy from Ariel Potot, the School of Chess Organization’s external vice president Ariel Potot.
