AFTER Barangay Ginebra suffered its fourth setback, coach Ato Agustin brought in new import Josh Powell to keep its hope of making it to the 39th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup playoffs alive.

Powell, a former Los Angeles Laker, arrived yesterday. The team will have to decide whether he suits up against Meralco Bolts at 8 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum or not.

The Barako Bull will face the Alaska Aces in the first game at 5:45 p.m.

Powell, who also played in Russia and Italy, is a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, when they won back-to-back NBA crowns in 2009 and 2010.

Meralco, on the other hand, is also set to parade Darnell Jackson as a replacement for Brian Butch. The 6’9” Jackson is 52nd overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft and has played with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks and Sacramento Kings.

“He’s massive, big, and has a totally different game. He has a very nice resume, but I still don't know the kind of chemistry he will bring to the table,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio.

Ginebra is currently in a tie with Barako Bull from 8th to 9th position. Both are sporting identical 2-4 card and are in danger of losing grip in their chances of advancing to the quarterfinals, a fate that forced Agustin to replace Leon Rodgers, who is a good scorer but weak in defense and rebounding.

Rodgers was third in the scoring department with an average of 33 points but last in rebounds with only 11 a game and no. 5 in turnovers with 2.33 per clip.
