Monday, March 31, 2014
AFTER a nine-year absence, the Asean MTB Cup will have its first leg in Danao City on June 13 to 15.
This year’s edition will be hosted by four countries-- Indonesia, Phillippines, Malaysia and Singapore. The Philippines will host the first leg at Danao City, while the second leg is set in Malaysia on Aug. 15-17.
The event aims to develop and promote cycling, especially mountain biking, in the Southeast Asian region.
Asean MTB organizer Oscar “Boying” Rodriguez said the Philippines was a contender back
in the early 2000’s, and they want to bring back the competition level to give athletes the needed exposure for South East Asian Games.
There will be no limit of participants as they try to urge new breed of mountain bikers to compete in international events.
“We have no limits, we will open it to everyone so that they can have experience in a big league, but the track competition will be hard in this cup,”ahe said.
The event will have the downhill and cross-country category divisions. The cross-country will be at the Danao City proper, while the downhill competition will be in Barangay Manlayag.
The event will have three international commissaries-- Ms.Beatrice Lajawa for Malaysia, Rodriguez of the Philippines and Maximillan Mager of Singapore.
Lajawa said it is very to hear of mountain bike races in Asian countries.
“We will travel from one country to another to promote this sport.” She added that the only big competitions are only the Ronda Pilipinas, Tour Philippines, and big races are in China.
The 2014 asean MTB is set as a dry run for 2015, when they will expand and invite more Asean countries to host the event.
“The bottom line is we have a good team. I see enthusiasm with this people.” Mager said.
