FIVE teams from Cebu will join the 17th edition of the National Nestea Beach Volleyball Battle of the Champions in May 2014 in Boracay Island.

The teams are two time men’s national champion University of the Visayas
(UV) , University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) and the men’s and women’s teams of Southwestern University (SWU).

For this year, defending champion team UV, coached by Raffy Briones, will field a new partner for Jade Becaldo since Mike Abria has graduated.

“This year, Becaldo will be paired with Mark Anthony Fernandez. He is not new to the sport but this will be the fi rst time that two will pair up in a major tournament. They need to work on their teamwork, while Fernandez will have to work on his endurance,” said Briones.

Becaldo, on the other hand, cannot guarantee that they will win this year’s title but hopes that they can have an impressive
finish in the tournament.

“Our chances of defending the title are slim but we will play our best,”
said Becaldo.
Meanwhile, USJ-R head coach Grace Antigua said that she will be pairing
Jade Illut with Owen Belen after Jason Uy also graduated.

“As of now, we are concentrating more on our men’s indoor team for the
national Prisaa meet next week. After this, we will be doubling our efforts for our beach volleyball team,” said Antigua.

USJ-R faced UV in the championship match last year. USPF’s Edmar Bonono
and Edward Ybanez settled for third and hope to improve on that this year.

SWU will be fielding Therese Rae Ramas and Flordemel Rodriguez in the women’s division and Rommel Pepito and Relan Taneo in the men’s division. (ISL)
