THE SunDown Beer Run aims to draw not just running enthusiasts but also beer fanatics in a gathering of fun and excitement during Lapu-Lapu’s annual Kadaugan Festival.

This year’s theme is Run, Dance, Drink and Crawl and hints at an upbeat and festive environment on April 26.

“Our runners will run, they will dance throughout the route. They’ll be going around 10 disco areas,” Lapu-Lapu City Councilor Harry Radaza said in a press conference yesterday. “The Kadaugan (festival) street party is a celebration.”

This will just be a fun run and there will be no prizes for the top finishers.

However, special awards will be given to the “Drunken Master” and “Team Tagay.” the latter consists of three to five members who will run and drink beer from start to finish.

Radaza said they will only allow plastic bottles to be used in the run.

“If the runners will bring bottles, we can put beer in the bottle,” he said.

The route features three beer stations and water stations, and a runner can drink one bottle per station. There will also be three Pulutan Stations, Electric dance music by J Marlon Orellano and liquor shots at the finish line.

Radaza said it is the only beer run in the Philippines and only one of nine beer running events in the world.

In 2012, the event drew more than 1,000 participants but this year, they’re not putting a limit.

“We don’t want to give figures out,” he said.

Participants will also have to crawl near the finish line.

The event will have the 3K and 6K categories with a registration fee of P250, which covers race bib, pulutan and drinks. They will also have exclusive beer run shirts for the first 500 registrants.

Runners may sign up at Runnr Ayala, Parkmall and at the Lapu-Lapu City Hall. Assembly area will be at Lapu-Lapu City Hall at 4 p.m, and the event will start at 5 p.m., just in time for sunset. (Richiel S. Chavez)
