VETERAN sports analyst Quinito Henson told the awardees in the 32nd Sportwriters Associaiton of Cebu-San Miguel Beer Awards to respect their foes and have integrity during his speech yesterday at the Ayala Activity Center.

Henson, a veteran boxing and basketball analyst for print and TV, said athletes must obey the rules of the game at all times.

“People are always saying this but it is always true, be humble in victory and gracious in defeat,” he said. “Your next victories will become sweeter because you tasted defeat.”

He then told the story of how Manny Pacquiao rose from his early defeats to Rustico Torrecampo and to his latest loss, a knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez.

He also called out boxer Merlito Sabillo, who lost his WBO title to Francisco Rodriguez in 10 rounds and told the boxer that he will recover and win again.

Aside from honing character, Henson told the athletes not to take shortcut in preparations.

“You have won half the battle if you are prepared,” he said, adding that athletes should give their all in the game.

“If you play with heart, play with smarts too. You’ll never know what will happen,” he said.

Henson also discouraged players from spending too much time complaining to the referees.

“Don’t involved yourself in what doesn’t involve you. Let your coach complain, if you keep on complaining you might get a technical,” he said.

Henson also praised the awardees in the Cebu sports scene and said they deserve not only recognition in Cebu but nationwide.

“Athletes of the Cebu are world class. I feel the entire country should be aware of how good Cebu athletes are,” he said.

Meanwhile, double world champion Rubilen Amit won her second Athlete of the Year award for winning two worlds titles in 2013 and a silver medal in the Southeast Asian Games.

Amit won the women’s 8-ball world title and the mixed double world title with Efren Bata Reyes.

Aside from Amit, Frank Gatdula received the Orlacsan Award for his contribution to cycling, while taekwondo coach Glenn Lava received a Presidential Award for helping Cebu win two world titles in taekwondo.

Philippine Taekwondo Association Region 7 president Tony del Prado also received the Sportsman of the Year award.
