NATIONAL Master Merben Roque topped the 3rd Loloy Ruelan Memorial Chess Open Tournament last Sunday at the Deep Blue Chess Center in SM City Cebu.

Roque was again unstoppable, yielding only one draw in the seven-round tournament held in honor of the first Cebuano national master.

Roque, who also won the 2nd VMA Power Open tournament last month, finished the two-day tournament with 6.5 points to take home the P5,000 champion’s prize. The event was co-organized by the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) and supported by Dr. Darcy Tabo-Tabo, Tuburan ABC president Wilfredo Diamante, lawyers Jong-Jong Melendez, Ben Harayo and Jose Mariano Tan, Engr. Ethis Dominguito, Cepca officers Jun Olis and Boy Pestaño and Andrew Aznar.

In his final match, Roque used the Sicilian Dragon opening to beat Glenn Pardillo in
43 moves.

Brothers Rommel and Ronald Ganzon got 6.0 points each to trail Roque and share the P4,000 cash prize for the second and third placers. Rommel, however, took the second place finish after acquiring higher tie break points of 29.5 to 25.0.

Fide Master Anthony Makinano was at solo fourth place after acquiring a total of 5.5 points.

Sharing the fifth to the ninth places were Edsel Montoya, Andrew Casiano, Felix Shaun Balbona, Pardillo and NM Rogelio Enriquez Jr.
