THE 7th edition of the Olango Challenge will be on May 17 at the Crimson Resort and Spa.

It will have the men’s and women’s 6K and 2K divisions.

Through this event, the Philippine Business for Social Progress chairman Jose Antonio Y. Aboitiz, in partnership with Philippine Aquatic Sports Association (Pasa) Alexander Reyes, hope to raise funds to put up school buildings in Olango Island.

“We have been doing this for the past six years and we were able to build three two-classroom buildings in Olango Island and we will be continuing that through this open water race,” said Aboitiz.

Aboitiz said the classroom buildings are located in Caw-oy, Tungasan and Talima.

For the last six years, 592 swimmers have joined the event, raising P 3.93 million.

Reyes said this year, they are expecting 150 swimmers as there is a growing interest in open water races.

“The Philippines is surrounded by water, but there are still Filipinos who don’t know how to swim. That is why we want to raise consciousness about the benefits of open water swimming,” said Reyes.

Reyes also said that the minimum age for the participants is 14 years old and they will be required to attend an orientation.

“Last year, the swimmers swam clockwise but this year, they will be doing counter-clockwise because of the tides,” Reyes said.

The registration will start on March 17. Early bird registration fee is P800 both in the 2K and 6K competitive swimming and P2,000 in the 2K and 6K fun category. Deadline for registration is May 9. Interested participants may sign up through olangochallenge@pbsp.org.ph or their Facebook account.
