TWO-TIME champion Ben Allen and 2011 and 2012 Xterra World Champion Lesley Paterson will be defending their respective turfs in the pro division of the Vaseline Men Xterra Triathlon Series this March 15 in Liloan, Cebu.

This year’s fourth edition is considered as one of the qualifying events for the World Championship in Maui, Hawaii for the men’s and women’s pro division, said Sunrise Events Inc. project director Princess Galura.

Allen and Paterson’s goal of defending their dominance in the race will be tough with the presence of several strong contenders such as Michael Bucek (2013 Yilan Olympic Distance Tri 2nd place; 2013 Action Asia Sprint KH Champion), Renata Bucher (2013 Xterra Australia Champion), Meiko Carey (2013 Xterra Japan Champion; 2012 Ironman 70.3 Centair Japan Age Champion), Dimitry Duke (2013 Maui Half Marathon Age Group Champion), Charlie Epperson (2013 Olympic-Distance Guam National Triathlon Champion), Dan Hugo (2013 Xterra South East Champio), Daz Parker (2013 Xterra Philippines 3rd place), Jacqui Slack (2013 Xterra Guam and Saipan Champion), Bradley Weiss (2014 Totalsports Challenge Champion). Some notable participants are Filipino celebrity-athletes Jericho Rosales and Cebuano Matteo Guidicelli.

A total of 400 participants will be taking the plunge this Saturday and expecting another challenging route.

“There is a slight change in the race route, but actually, almost the same. But this year, there are two transition areas,” said Galura.

The race will start on the shoreline of Seafront Beach Resort in Liloan. It will be the starting area for the swim leg. The standard distance participants will do the 1.5-kilometer open water swim then the Lite participants will follow with the 500-meter swim in just one loop.

In the transition for the bike segment, triathletes that will be doing the full triathlon should complete two rounds of the 18-kilometer course, while Lite participants must complete one loop.

The second transition will be at the Liloan Elementary School track oval staging area for the end of the bike leg, and the start of the run leg. The finish line will be at the expo area. The run course is as challenging as the bike course with long and technical climbs, followed by dusty and rocky terrain.

Galura said they will not be holding a trail running this year because the municipality of Liloan prefers to make a one-day road closure. (PR)
