PASIG City—With all its members accounted for, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles were as fluid as a well-oiled machine as they whipped the St. Francis College-Cavite, 91-47, to breeze through the quarterfinal round of the 2014 SeaOil-National Basketball Training Camp Elite League National High School Championships held at the Ynares Sports Arena.

Unlike the Eagles, the other Cebuano bet, University of San Carlos Baby Warriors, struggled in their debut but luckily recovered later in the day to also book a slot to the quarterfinal round.

It lost to Iloilo Chinese Commercial High School, 73-57, in the morning but made up for it with a 70-66 win over West Negros University in the afternoon, to enter the next round.

In the game against Iloilo, USC played without its starting center Kervin Villagracia and wingman Jamcerson Sable, who were suspended for one game following their participation in the fight-marred Cebu City leg finals last Feb. 23 at the Capitol Parish Gym. With the team intact in the afternoon, they were able to overcome the morning’s debacle and advance.

SHS-AdC had its own share of suspensions, as they played without coach Sai Bacalso and leading scorer Jair Igna in their 80-76 loss to the UAAP champions National University Bullpups last Thursday.

After having served their suspensions, Bacalso is back to calling the shots and Igna was back with the starting five. SHS-AdC started the game hot, holding the Caviteños scoreless for the first eight minutes and 41 seconds of the game en route to dropping a 25-0 blast.

St. Francis then outscored SHS-AdC 6-4 on the last 79 seconds of the opening quarter.

Although the Eagles slowed down in both offense and defense, the outcome of the game was already apparent when SHS-AdC built a 47-17 lead at the halftime break.

With Bacalso getting the luxury of resting his starters the rest of the way, SHS-AdC’s bench came out blazing with Arvid Jason Ong and Steven Cedric Co, who proved to be threats from the three-point land.

Ridge Dominic Mantua finished with 12 points and flashy guard Gio Laguyo had 11.

Today, the Eagles will play the Assumption College of Davao City in the crossover quarterfinals, while the Baby Warriors will take on Bracket A leader Chiang Kai Shek. (RCM)
