MANILA — The much-awaited encounter between big men and former Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. rivals June Mar Fajardo and Greg Slaughter will push through today as San Miguel Beer faces Ginebra Kings, while Rain or Shine meets Barako Bull in the resumption of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen and the Kings, coming from contrasting victories last Friday, face each other at 5:15 p.m. Rain or Shine, on the other hand, will start its campaign when it faces Barako Bull in the first game at 3 p.m.
Import Josh Boone and Arwind Santos led the Beermen to a 94-76 rout of Meralco Bolts, while the Ginebra Kings needed an extra five minutes to beat Barako Bull, 108-104.
The 6’10” Fajardo, the Philippine Cup best player of the conference, showed up in uniform but did not play for the Beermen due to an ankle injury. But he promised to play today to renew his rivalry with the 7’0 “Slaughter of Ginebra.
“I promise to play on Sunday,” said Fajardo referring to today’s early clash of rated teams.
Leon Rodgers, who finished with 31 points, eight rebounds and four assists, will lead the Kings’ charges along with Slaughter and the 6’9” Japeth Aguilar. They combined for 57 points to frustrate the debut of Barako Bull’s Joshua Dollard, who finished with an impressive 45 points, 18 rebounds, three assists and four block shots.
Defending champion Alaska Aces held Globalport Batang Pier scoreless for over six minutes in the fourth period for a 93-77 win yesterday at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Last year’s best import Rob Dozier started the big run by the Aces, hitting 15 points in the pivotal period, while Batang Pier’s offense missed 12 field goal attempts. (FCC)
