CEBUANO powerhouse Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu had an auspicious debut, while the University of San Carlos and Division 2 entry San Isidro Parish School will start their bids in the 2014 SeaOil-National Basketball Training Camp (NBTC) Elite League National Finals.

The SHS-AdC Magis Eagles lost their opening day game against UAAP back-to-back champions National University Bullpups, 80-76.

The Cebu City Leg champions were playing without leading scorer Jair Igna and coach Sai Bacalso, who were suspended because of the championship game scuffle between SHS-AdC and USC two Sundays ago at the Capitol Parish Gym.

The Magis Eagles were trailing by 13 points in the first half before SHS-AdC was able to take a one-point lead, 61-60, in the third period.

Both teams traded shots and leads in the fourth but the Bullpups prevailed after the final buzzer.

Today, the Magis Eagles will try to regroup as they play the champion team from Cavite at 12:30 p.m.

Britt Reroma, on the other hand, will return to the national finals as a coach, not of the defending champions San Beda College Red Cubs but with the USC Baby Warriors.

The Warriors will debut against the Iloilo leg qualifiers Iloilo Chinese Commercial School at 11 a.m. and will have their second match against Bacolod City champions West Negros University Baby Mustangs at 5 p.m.

SHS-AdC is grouped in Bracket B with NU and Cavite, while USC is in Group C with the two Western Visayas schools.

Chang Kai Shek College, Hope Christian School and NU team B are in Group A, while Zamboanga City, Davao and Cagayan de Oro are in Group D.

SIPS meanwhile is in Bracket C in Division 2 along with Reedley International School of Quezon City and a Bukidnon qualifier.

The top two teams in the each group will advance to the crossover quarterfinal round. (RCM/Sun.Star Cebu)
