IT’s all systems go for the opening of the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association’s (Cecaba) 13th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial this Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The alumni-based tournament has attracted a total of 14 teams and is expected to run four months.
Defending champions, the Gaisano Capital Group-backed Batch 1995, is expecting to find tough challenges all throughout the competition.
Cecaba will be missing one important person, its founding president Chester Cokaliong, who is skipping this year’s competition.
Cokaliong’s busy schedule with his businesses prevented him from competing this year.
In the absence of the shipping magnate, the organizing committee made up of Joel Chan, Jeff Go and Sammy Sia vowed to make the season as memorable and as competitive as it has been in the past 12 years.
The Cecaba founder however is still lined up in the Argentina Corned Beef backed Batch 80’s/90’s A, in case he finds time to play.
Competing to unseat Gaisano Capital Group ‘95 are Argentina Corned Beef 80s/90s A; Fil-Ann Enterprises 80s/90s B; Dewfoam 1988; The 1st Family Appliance Circle Corp 1994; Batch 1997; Kaking 1998; Jepoy Express 1999; Batch 2000; Dunkin Donuts 2004; PTT Fuels & Lubricants 2005; Batch 2006; The 1st Family Appliance Circle Corp 2007 and Cebu Dragon 2009.
Commissioner Danny Duran announced that the 14 teams will play in a single round robin format in the elimination round. The top eight teams will advance to the quarterfinal round with the top four teams getting a twice to beat advantage.
The semifinal round is a single round robin affair while the finals is a best-of-3 championship series.
