SWU rules anew-A A +A

FOR NOW, it looks like the upcoming Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Regular Season is going to be a dog fight for the top four finishers last season, just looking by the way they upgraded their respective line-ups and the way they fought and battled for the 2014 Cebu City Mayor’s Cup Sinulog Invitational that concluded last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
And after the four-day tournament, Southwestern University Cobras, the team that has the least changes and with still intact starters and bench players, came out champions and earned P50,000 and the championship trophy after beating the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars 68-47. USJ-R pocketed P30,000.
Meanwhile, Josue Segumpan scored 15 points and Wowie Escosio added with 10 to lead UV to a 71-59 win over the University of San Carlos Warriors to win the third place.
Cesafi 2013 MVP Mark Jayven Tallo edged his teammate Monbert Arong (shooting guard) for the tournament MVP title by just one vote, and were later joined by the other Cobras Landry Sanjo (center) and Daryl Goloran (power forward) in the Mythical 5 Selection.
USJ-R team captain James Regalado (small forward) prevented an All-SWU Mythical 5 Selection.
Regalado had a tournament long brilliance, including a 24-point explosion over the University of the Visayas Green Lancers last Tuesday. That win earned USJ-R a slot in the finals.
The Jaguars started strong, and even led, 16-11, after the first quarter.
However, Tallo broke loose in the second period and the crafty guard exploded for 14 of SWU’s 19 points that gave the Cobras a 30-25 lead at the half.
USJ-R tried to regroup but after Regalado’s two free throws and Congan Quentin Luzoladio’s put back, SWU dropped a devastating 11-0 run that gave them a 44-29 lead with 4:35 left to play in the third period.
It was during this situation when suddenly things went a little ugly, resulting to the expulsion of SWU power forward Daryl Goloran.
Goloran reacted to a cheap shot after he gave USJ-R point guard Raymond Catipay a hard foul. Jaguars assistant coach Edito Salacot threw a white board eraser at Goloran and bother were ejected.
