Maximo bags gold for Cebu in Batang Pinoy Cycling

ANA Patricia Maximo of dominated the Batang Pinoy Cycling national finals, winning a gold medal for Cebu City in the road bike event Thursday in Bacolod City.

Icamax, 14, and using a Ridley-Token-Campagnolo racing rig designed by Bikeguru, completed the road circuit race in 46:03.34 minutes, more than two minutes ahead of second placer Maia Yusay of Bacolod City (46:08.79 mins). Mikaela Paulina completed the podium winners at third place with a time of 50:18.20 minutes.

The grade 8 student of Sacred Heart School - Hijas de Jesus managed to control the race by staying at the back then broke away from the field after five kilometers from the start.


“When I made my breakaway I was surprised that the others did not follow so I just continued my effort to cross the finish line first,” said the 2013 Philipping National Games (PNG) track cycling double medalist who prepared for the PNG by racing against men twice her age.

Earlier in the race, her chain got derailed and fell on the road but she recovered in time to rejoin the group. “My knee hurt when I fell. Good thing it was not that serious and I was able to get back to the race,” said Maximo.

Meanwhile, Alexis Soqueno of Negros Occidental and Karen Janario of Leyte grabbed four golds apiece in athletics at the Pana-ad Sports Park and Stadium here.

The 15-year-old Soqueno ruled the boys 110-m boys hurdles with a time of 14.77-sec, the fastest in the history of the meet. He earlier won the gold in the boys high jump in a record-breaking feat with a leap of 1.93-m. His fourth came in the boys 4-100-m relay in 44.9.

But not to be outdone, the 14-year-old Janario overcame the woes her family suffered by super Typhoon Yolanda, set a new record in the girls 200-m dash with a time of 25.7, erasing her previous best of 26.2 seconds.

She also won the gold in the girls 100-m dash IN 12.71 . and the 100m hurdles in 16.46. (PR)
