Jr. NBA/WNBA gets overwhelming response

AN UNEXPECTED number of participants from different schools in Cebu, Bohol and Ormoc showed up in the Jr. National Basketball Association (NBA)/Women’s NBA basketball clinic Phase 1 event at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu yesterday.

The organizers were preparing to get about 200 registrants for the event, but were instead greeted by a sweet surprise when 504 students aged 10-14 joined the morning session of the Jr. NBA /WNBA training program. To make it more interesting 113 these players are girls.

They are also expecting about 500 more in the afternoon session.


Silvan Benedict Fuentes, Grade 3 from the University of San Jose-Recoletos said he was encourage to join the training to improve his playing.

Fuentes’s coach Archie Binos said that the program will be a great help for aspiring young basketball players. “They will
experience the NBA brand of training and additional skills”, Binos said.

Joeriel Ornopia from Cabancalan 1 Elementary School, said she was urge to join the Jr. NBA/ WNBA for her to know what basketball really is.

“My male classmates know how to play and we want to be able to play as well as them,”, she said.

NBA Asia Manager Carlos Singson said that they are expanding their reach this year with the addition of the WNBA program.

He said Jr. NBA/WNBA is building basketball character players and their ultimate mission is to go across the demography and get much
wider participants younger than 10.

The participants from Phase 1 will be invited to the Regional Selection Camp this March to determine the region's representatives for the National Training Camp on April. (Joyse Almojallas, USJ-R Masscom Intern)
