BARANGAY Ginebra pulled off a 108-95 win over Alaska Aces yesterday at the Cuneta Astrodome to grab the semifinals slot of the 39th Philippine Basketball Association Philippines Cup.

Japeth Aguilar was named the Best Player of the Games for scoring 29 points.

The game however turned physical with Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa ending up getting called for a flagrant foul after shoving an elbow to Calvin Abueva’s head.

Meanwhile, defending champion Talk 'N Text and San Mig Coffee dispute the last semifinal slot when they battle Sunday in a rubber match of their best-of-three quarterfinal series of the 39th Philippine Basketball
Association (PBA) Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

The Tropang Texters needed a big push in the final half to eke out an 82-77 win in Game Two last Friday and avenged an 83-90 setback in Game One last Tuesday. And with both teams tied the short series, 1-1, odds are about even when they collide at 5 p.m to determine which will play Ginebra in the best-of-seven semifinals.

The other semis match pits second seed Rain or Shine against third seed Petron Blaze starting Monday. The Elasto Painters, enjoying a twice-to-beat advantage, need only one game to eliminate no. 7 Globalport, 106-96, on Wednesday while the Blaze Boosters ended the hope of Barako Bull (2-0) in their quarterfinal battle.

As the Tropang Texters and the Coffee Mixers are being mentored by veteran coaches in Noman Black and Tim Cone respectively, it is expected today's do-or-die game would go down-the-wire and only breaks in the end game will determine the winner. Both teams being the most dominant in the last three years, are also expected to play more physical in their quest to advance into the Final Four.

“It was really physical last Friday. But it's really part of the game. On my part, 'yun na siguro ang pagkakamali ko because I was carried away by it. I will just be more focused in our next game,” said Pingres of San Mig Coffee Mixers, who are seeking for their 11th title since 1988.

For their part, Talk 'N Text' Ryan Reyes and new acquisition KG Canaleta vowed to do much better in the deciding Game 3.
