AS the organizers moved the Cebu City Mayor’s Sinulog Cup Basketball tournament, University of the Visayas Green Lancers head coach Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr. says he wants his team to skip the event, but for another reason.

Belano told Sun.Star Cebu that he is not keen on playing if the organizers will not waive the “entry fee” for the teams.

“No, we’re not playing until matanggal ang P20,000 nga registration fee. In all the tournaments that UV is invited (to play), we were never required to pay entrance fee, even if the prize (for the champion) is P100,000,” Belano said.

But Southwestern University Cobras head cach Yayoy Alcoseba told Sun.Star Cebu that the figure is not an entrance fee but a price schools are obliged to pay for tickets.

“The P20,000 is not an entrance fee but that is the value of tickets that each school has to buy. That is P5,000 for each day. The organizers informed us that in order for us to have a crowd, we are required to buy tickets worth P5,000 per day. In return, we can sell these tickets to the school employees and students. Belano was absent during the meeting, so naturally he doesn’t know what was going on,” Alcoseba said.

The tournament, which will serve as teaser to the upcoming Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) 2014 Regular Season has been moved to Jan. 27-30 instead of the earlier scheduled date Jan.23-26.

USJ-R new head coach Jun Noel said his team is also joining.

“We will join for the exposure of the players,” Noel said.

According to Alcoseba, UV team manager Sam-sam Gullas has confirmed the team’s participation.

UV liaison officer Marichu Cabanilla confirmed that the Cebu 1st district congressman had committed the Green Lancers to play in the tournament.

“If that’s the decision of the management, then I have to oblige. But I’m not comfortable knowing that we have to sell tickets as a way to join this tournament,” Belano said after he was informed of the decision of the management.

Aside from UV, SWU and USJ-R the fourth team to compete in this four-day tournament is the University of San Carlos Warriors.
