USJ-R bags silver

THE University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) settled for second place after a tough 25-18, 25-18, 15-25, 25-22, loss to Hope Christian School of the National Capital Region (NCR), in the Shakey’s Girl’s Volleyball League Season 11 Tournament of Champions finals yesterday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

On the other hand, New Zealand won the third place against Western Visayas,18-25,26-24,25-16.

NCR banked on Mae Angeli Basarde Montebon, Isabel Molde and Justin Dorog, who are former members of the formidable Catmon Elementary School volleyball team.


“They are instrumental and helped NCR bagged this year’s title,” said Southwestern University trainer Marlon Luces, who watched the game.

Third straight

Dorog made 18 kills to go with one block while Molde made 17 attacks, a block and an ace to lead NCR’s third straight title.

During the best-of-five finals, NCR easily took the first and second sets but the Cebuanas rallied in the third. Frances Derder and Mary Dominic Pacred led the team and took the third set but NCR recovered and took the fourth set to retain their dominance in the tournament.

In the semifinals , NCR advanced to the gold medal match after a 25-19, 25-7 disposal of New Zealand while CV beat WVI in another three-setter, 25-12, 20-25, 25-17, in the
other Final Four match.

NCR swept the Pool A elims by beating Western Visayas, 25-5, 25-21, while Central Visayas, making the battle for the crown a duel of the top teams in the event which gathers the eight regional champions and two foreign squads, the other being the Victoria team from Australia. (PR)
