Teenage girl tops men’s race

JUNIOR female cyclist Ana Patricia “Ica” Maximo, 14, of YKKBikes.com surprised the field by grabbing first place in the Golden Men’s B category in the inaugural Chigo Criterium road cycling race in Mandaue City, Cebu.

The Grade 8 student of Sacred Heart School - Hijas de Jesus, riding a Ridley-Token rig, out-sprinted veteran Al Geyrozaga in the finish. Both riders completed the 28-km race in 1:01:31, while Rey Mahinay got third place.

The race was cruising at an average speed of 27 kph but with attacks and counter-attacks by different riders, speed sometimes reached 37 kph.


On the other hand, favorite Rex Gonzales dominated the Golden Men’s A category over Manny Talisay and Haylin Bardaje.

“I didn’t expect I can win. This is a good start for the year,” said Icamax, a double medalist in the 2013 Philippine National Games (PNG) Junior Track Cycling Championships in Amoranto Velodrome, Quezon City.

Succeeding stages of the Chigo Cycling series will be held later this month and series winners will be recognized according to Cebu MultiSport, the event promoters. (PR)
