Suico, Silvana face crucial tests

IT’S a must-win situation for both Omega Boxing Stable’s Vergilio Silvano and Randy Suico tonight because a victory could open up significant chapters in their careers.

Silvano (13-2-1, 8 KOs), a hard-hitting promising young prospect, is defending his Philippine Boxing Federation light flyweight crown against up-and-comer Louie Arlos (7-1, 2 KOs) in the main event of tonight’s card at the Dalaguete Sports Complex.

A victory for the 22-year-old Dalaguete native should earn him a crack at the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) light flyweight belt in April in Japan, possibly against titleholder Shin Ono.

Silvano is on a roll, winning 12 straight bouts, in which eight of those didn’t go the distance.

Arlos should pose as a serious threat to Silvano’s dreams because his only loss was a razor-thin split decision against unbeaten Rajah Renoel Pael.

“We have to show an impressive performance. It is a must win fight for us because it is our key to an OPBF title fight,” Omega Boxing Gym head coach Christopher “Ping Ping” Tepora told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Suico (30-8-1, 25 KOs), on the other hand, is up against comebacking fighter William George (9-13, 2 KOs) in the co-main event.

Suico won’t be given a title shot immediately after this fight but this bout is also as important because it should dictate if he still has what it takes to be back on top. Not much is left in most 33-year-old fighters but with a new team and a new gym, Suico’s coach feels that the former world title challenger can return to his winning ways.

“It is also a must-win fight for Suico because he must go through this in his road to another world title fight,” said Tepora, who now trains Suico along with Eper Tepora.
