Power corrupts

-A A +A

I WAS informed by some members of the media covering the Talisay City Government beat that City Administrator John Yre Delos Reyes has been personally attacking me on Facebook because of my commentaries on the way his father, Mayor Johnny V. Delos Reyes (JVR), runs the affairs of the city. Well, I don’t give a damn. I will not waste my time answering his allegations in the social networking sites. What is John Yre’s intention in attacking me personally? Just to destroy my image and credibility being a media man? Other politicians whose paths I had crossed did that before. But they did not succeed.

In fact, there was a politician who demanded to the management of GMA 7 that I should be sacked for commenting against him. But the management did not give in to the politician’s demand because they know that I was just doing my job. The same politician told his audience in his barangay sorties during the 2013 elections to boycott my radio program as I was supposedly spreading lies against him. There was also another politician who placed me under surveillance apparently to look into my private life. But they didn’t get anything. I am still in the media and people still listen to my radio commentary program, read my columns in Sun.Star Cebu and Superbalita and watch my TV news program. Instead of attacking me personally, from which they have nothing to gain, they should have answered my commentaries squarely. I raised legitimate issues and not personal matters. So, stick to the issue.

I would like to challenge John Yre to criticize me and answer my commentaries in the mainstream media, not on Facebook. Call a news conference and pour out all your sentiments. On FB only your “friends” can read your message against me. And people who know me won’t believe your allegations. I want your allegations direct from your mouth. I won’t even bother to answer your ‘paidhacks’ radio blocktimers. Kanang gikan gyud sa imong baba. Ayaw pagbinayot Mr. John Yre. Magpakatotoo ka.

The way JVR runs the affair of the city government of Talisay is really topsy-turvy. This is because he doesn’t have knowledge about governance. I can pardon JVR during his first year because he was still in the learning process. But now that his term is about to end, nothing has changed. Still, he does not know anything. He is just being used and exploited by some people around him, including his close relatives. And one of this is his own son, John Yre, who screened contracts and transactions in behalf of his father. And JVR will just subscribe and succumb to the whims and caprices of his son. Poor JVR.

I know the Delos Reyes family way, way back. We both hail from Zamboanga del Norte. They were from Sindangan town while I came from Dipolog City, the province’s capital. I used to visit his mountain resort in Gaas, Balamban on weekends. JVR’s wife, Myrna, used to cook native chicken for me. JVR was just and ordinary and a kind hearted-person. After he was proclaimed, he called me up and asked for some advice on how to run the affairs of the City Government. I also have some of my thoughts.

But when he became mayor, I observed that he was no longer the JVR I used to know. Power went to his head. Indeed, power corrupts.

Imagine he employed his close relatives at City Hall. From his wife, to sons and daughters, in laws and his brothers and sisters.

Although, this will not fall under nepotism because they were hired as job-order employees. But if JVR has delicadeza, he should not do that.

You check other local chief executives in Metro Cebu. Who among them are doing what JVR is doing in Talisay? There is only one Rama occupying a appointed position at Cebu City Hall. Only Edu Rama, a nephew of Mayor Mike Rama. Mayor Jonas Cortes of Mandaue and Paz Radaza of Lapu-Lapu, respectively, are not doing it.

Because of his lack of knowledge about governance, JVR sometimes bypasses the authority of the City Council. He does not even follow the audit rules and regulations. Imagine employing the services of a security agency without the benefit of conducting a bidding.

Because of this, he is now facing administrative and criminal complaints before the Visayas Ombudsman filed by Vicente Cabreta Jr.
I was informed that the Ombudsman is about to resolve the issue.

Why would JVR insist that the City should secure a P300-million loan to fimance the construction of a new public market in Tabunok?

Because according to sources, some “entrepreneurial minds” in his administration already made some cash advances from the contractor. If the project would not push through, it will be a big headache for these people. And why would he insist in requesting P10 million for his intelligence funds? Well, your guess is good as mine. Intelligence funds are not subject to ordinary auditing by the Commission on Audit.

Managinot man gani na sila diha ug pangayo og commission sa mga uniform suppliers. Kana pang intelligence funds nga confidential. Mga kapal muks.
