They all knew they couldn’t impeach PNoy

-A A +A

THE four members of the House judiciary committee who endorsed the three impeachment complaints against President Aquino were not born the other day.

They knew impeachment is political and decided by numbers. They knew that PNoy's Liberal Party and its allies control the House.

They were indulging in fantasy if they thought the complaints were not doomed even before the filing. The initial committee decision that the documents were sufficient in form was ministerial and required by the rules. No way could they've seen it as a homerun sprint.

Malacañang is no novice in exercise of power. It only has to send word to its Congress allies openly in certifying urgent legislation or quietly by illicit messages--and it's done. (What they did about the long-running tangle over the Freedom of Information bill is textbook set play. All that the Palace relayed to stall the process was: "Dribble, dribble.")

When Palace p.r. said it had nothing to do with the killing of the impeachment complaints, it did so with a straight face. It probably didn't make any move because it didn't have to. Allies competed with one another in defending PNoy at the committee hearing. They knew what to do even though no request or order was given. Good dog, here get a bone.

So what's with all the pretense: the outcry of complainants (one shouted, "Shame on you!") and the Palace pious claim of innocence?

Standard roles each camp must play. Propaganda lines each protagonist must follow.

Both sides knew how the impeachment charade would be played and would end.
