The impossible bridge
The idea of a third bridge between mainland Cebu and Mactan island has again surfaced through the pronouncements of Mayor Adelino Baguio Sitoy, a seasoned politician who is now mayor of the town of Cordova in Mactan island.
In fact, the good mayor has boldly announced that the groundbreaking for the envisioned third bridge would be in January 2015.
One end of the bridge would be in Shell island in Cordova and the other end would be at the mouth of the Guadalupe river either connected to or not connected to the viaduct of the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City.
There is no debate on Cebu’s need for a third bridge. But there is a big question on whether or not this idea is nothing more than an impossible dream at this point in time.
First, constructing the third bridge in the proposed location can be impractical and impossible because it requires the transfer of the international port to another suitable location.
Then--and this is more difficult to surmount-- there is the usual breaucratic red tape to pass through before the “groundbreaking” could finally take place.
In the meantime, the proponents of the project should finish the technical study and finally present it to the people who matter.--Erny Elizondo
