Davao’s ‘hipon’; Sharon being fat

-A A +A

TWO words used by celebrities have lately spiced public conversation.

Comedian Ramon Bautista angered two VIPs in Davao when during a Kadayawan rave party he described people in the city as "hipon" (shrimp or prawn): "Ang daming hipon dito sa Davao."

"Hipon," they say, is idiom for attractive only from the neck down. Mayor Rodrigo Duterte's children -- Vice Mayor Paolo and former mayor Sara --were fuming: the joke was "disrespectful" and offensive. Bautista promptly apologized on stage but that didn't stop the City Council from declaring him "persona non grata," a symbolic sanction LGUs have borrowed from diplomats.

"Fat" is politically incorrect. You bully obese kids in grade school but you don't tell a grown woman fat, not in her face and not explicitly. Maybe "amply endowed." Not "healthy," which would be an insult as obesity is totally unhealthy.

Sharon Cuneta, megastar to her publicists, apologized on Facebook for having let her TV-movie fans down. "I let myself go," she wrote, "I allowed myself to get fat and stay fat."

Bautista's run-in with the Dutertes recalls entertainer Rico J. Puno's boorish joke at a shipping company’s party in Cebu against a high public official. Like Puno, Bautista crossed boundaries under the license of entertainment.

It was Sharon who said the "F" word; she should be angry only at herself. Her fault though went beyond piling up pounds as she let time "pass her by."

Sharon inflicted herself on her fans.

The least she could've done when she, er, ballooned was not to be seen by them.
