Wouldn’t you wish to dine with the Pope?

“And He went on to say to the one who had invited Him...when you give a luncheon or dinner, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind...”
--Luke 14:3

THE most exclusive upcoming lunch or dinner in the country would be Pope Francis's meal with 30 guests in Tacloban City next Jan. 17.

Who wouldn't want so sit down and eat with the pope during his Philippine visit? It may be no feast in the biblical sense (the menu is not yet known) but guests would be content with fish and bread as the Lord's disciples were.

Most likely there would be no state dinner or private luncheon arranged by the nation's rich and powerful during the visit. Given this pope's distaste for trappings of affluence, nobody has dared ask Vatican for the chance to meet with the pope in a banquet setting.

Organizers working with Rome though haven't taken literally Christ's injunction in Luke's story. There may be no crippled, lame or blind invitees unless they became handicapped because of super-typhoon Yolanda's wrath.

But symbolism is compellingly clear that Pope Francis would rather spend his time with people who have less in life and yet have suffered a lot more. That would bar the Romualdezes of Leyte although they were also typhoon victims.

The pope's visit is for everyone, church publicists say, but the church vicar is drawn to victims of poverty and calamity.

It's no put-on style or hype. It's to tell those who own a fortune to share it with the poor and the able-bodied to help the physically infirm.
