Has P-Noy blinked on cha-cha, 2nd term?-A A +A
Sunday, August 17, 2014
THERE were suspicions that President Aquino wasn’t serious about the bombshell he exploded in the interview that TV5 broadcast last Aug. 13.
He was floating a trial balloon and trying to photo-shop the lame-duck image produced in his July 18 Sona when he told the nation in near tears he had less than 20 months before his term ends.
Well, last Friday Malacañang “clarified” that P-Noy didn’t say amending the Constitution and seeking a second term “should happen now.” And he’s not supporting cha-cha, it said.
We don’t know if this latest explanation, which projects P-Noy as having blinked, could be one of Malacañang press office’s confusing statements.
The Palace said P-Noy would not push the cha-cha.
How then, good heavens, could he clip SC’s powers and extend his stay? Ah but he could hide his support and let others openly do the work. We all know what presidential “distancing” from a controversial activity means; he’s usually deep in it.
With a nation upset and troubled over the plan, P-Noy is now saying he’s not backing it. But he couldn’t hide or disavow his part once the LP alliance machinery starts moving. That would make the exercise duplicitous and dishonest.
If P-Noy wouldn’t dump cha-cha, he’d face the prospect of being kicked in the ass, which the nation did to Estrada, Ramos and Arroyo when those presidents tried doing it.
And didn’t he hear his mother Cory’s 1997 counsel to presidents? P-Noy wasn’t president yet then but this should ring in his ears: Don’t worry about things going wrong after your term. “Trust the people.”
