Adopting Binay-A A +A
Tuesday, August 5, 2014
VICE President Jejomar Binay said the ruling Liberal Party (LP) is eyeing him as its adopted standard bearer in the 2016 presidential elections.
In several interviews, Binay said he is open to the possibility of being the administration candidate despite the rivalry of LP and his United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) in the 2010 and 2013 senatorial polls.
It has been said that politics is addition. In Binay’s case, politics is adoption.
Binay made the claim a week after President Noynoy Aquino talked about him in his 5th State of the Nation Address, with PNoy recalling the time he was ambushed in 1987 with Binay as his companion.
Speculations ran wild PNoy, the LP chairman, might endorse Binay. Binay’s daughter, Sen. Nancy Binay, said this was a possibility.
If it pushes through, that would be like an ambush on Interior Secretary Mar Roxas.
Senate President Franklin Drilon, an LP stalwart, has denied Binay’s claim.
“There’s no such thing. Honest, I am a member of the executive committee of the LP and there’s been no discussion on that,” Drilon said.
Drilon said the LP is still keen on supporting Roxas, with emphasis on the words “still keen.” Nobody expects Drilon to talk about it yet, otherwise some ships would sink.
Pulse Asia’s Ulat ng Bayan Survey for the period March 19-26, 2014 showed Binay would be the runaway winner if the elections were held today with 40 percent selecting him as their first choice, while Roxas rated 6 percent.
Neophyte senator Grace Poe was a distant second to Binay with 15 percent, while Sen. Chiz Escudero got 9 percent.
Secretary Mar Roxas could raise his head to the heavens in gratitude that the elections were not held today.
