PNoy’s sad pitch, near tears

“Those who do not weep, do not see.”
--Victor Hugo, “Les Miserables”

THE pre-Sona leak about President Aquino's speech last July 28 was that it would be "new and unexpected."

Day-after news bannered cliches like "The Filipino is worth living for" and "Let's continue what we started": not profound, surely not new and not unexpected.

The pitch was about his parents Ninoy and Cory Aquino, their legacy, and how he wouldn't allow critics to destroy gains of his first four years in office.

The usual take on poverty, joblessness, health, education. Very little about the DAP ruling over which he engaged in pitch battle with critics. None about the senators he sent to jail and the pork barrel fraud.

So what was new and unexpected? The tears, or near tears.

One broadsheet said PNoy "tears up," an idiom that also means "on the verge of tears."

Another national paper described PNoy as "teary-eyed," "choking with emotion."

The report that he "left not a dry eye in the house" was exaggerated. TV sets showed PNoy's sister Kris crying (elegant, not Niagara tears) but also some lawmakers were caught smiling, even smirking.

Stiff price

People didn't expect PNoy to say the inevitability of ending his term, the sadness of having lost his dad and mom in the country's service, and some dose of self-pity for having been roundly flogged by detractors.

How could stout defense of DAP or heavy assault on the Supreme Court beat the melodramatic stance? Even Jojo Binay who's casting covetous glances at Malacañang couldn't find fault.

The price though was stiff: this early, PNoy may have declared himself a lame-duck.
