Is Erap not ‘fed up already’?

-A A +A

AT A lunch meeting with Vice President Jojo Binay, after they had the main course, Manila Mayor Erap Estrada was asked if he would like another serving.

Erap replied, "No, thank you. I'm fed up already."

THAT’S a sample of Eraptions: jokes about former president Joseph Estrada, which he himself told or encouraged others to tell, even though they poked fun on his alleged or admitted mediocrity, fractured speech, binge drinking, skirt-chasing, pocketing bribes, and other faults.

Erap jokes have helped sustain his popularity or notoriety.

The jokes have not nettled him and criminal charges have not stopped him. Instead, he exploited accusation of plunder, for which he was jailed and convicted, when he ran again for president in 2010 (he placed second to PNoy) and for Manila mayor in 2013 (he beat the iconic Fred Lim).

Apparently, Erap is not "fed up already" about elective office.

In Pulse Asia's June 24-July 2, 2014 survey, he was listed among 11 probable presidential bets in 2016.

His reported reaction? Erap didn't dismiss the "possibility."

His 9 percent poll rating was just 3 percent less than Grace Poe's 12 percent and higher than 7 percent-each scores of Mar Roxas, Chiz Escudero and Miriam Santiago.

Erap even out-polled Roxas, presumptive bet of LP and PNoy.

What might shut down Erap's career in politics would be a Supreme Court ruling that the terms of his pardon would've long banned him from running. A public commitment not to seek elective office was a premise for his pardon.

The SC might enforce that condition. If not, the public could. Voters could say "we're fed up already," Erap.
