Why keeping Abad is still a bad idea

-A A +A

ALLOW that one more pun on Budget Secretary Butch Abad, architect and implementor of DAP (Disbursement Acceleration Program).

Word play on Abad’s name has become a cliche and people love a cliche, which many cling to until the “new” cliche comes.

Take “at the end of the day”: voted most-hated cliche by US Plain English Campaign (2004), BBC Magazine (2008) and Australian language gurus (2010).

This year Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama still uses it; Sen. Grace Poe has stopped. (The last time she said it, she dropped “of the day” from “at the end.”)

But people’s love for cliches couldn’t equal President Aquino’s passion for Abad and Abad’s passion for his job. Neither would let go. Despite the Supreme Court ruling that DAP is unconstitutional, illegal and wrong. Despite public clamor for sanctions on the wrongdoing.

P-Noy said “I can’t accept that doing right by our people is wrong.”

Right? Wrong. (I resisted the urge to use an exclamation point instead of a period, fearing the City’s Anti-Indecency Board might see lewdness in the “!” mark.)

Something sordid

The reason keeping Abad is bad is that it would tell us the President:
[ ] Doesn’t believe creating and enforcing DAP was unconstitutional and illegal and therefore wrong;
[ ] Apparently won’t initiate the SC-ordered prosecution;
[ ] In effect negates and blocks the system of checks-and-balances in government;
[ ] Re-enforces criticism P-Noy doesn’t pursue his “straight-path” program against friends and allies.

Then there’s that “conspiracy theory” some critics raise: Butch must know something sordid and ugly about P-Noy.
