POLICE Regional Office (PRO) 7 Chief Prudencio Tom Bañas seems determined to make good his vow to make the drive against illegal drugs his priority. Since he assumed his post two months ago, various units under the PRO 7 have suddenly acquired vigor to go after persons suspected to be involved in the illegal drugs trade especially in Metro Cebu.

The drive is already difficult to ignore. For example, the police ushered in the month of July with simultaneous raids in the cities of Cebu and Mandaue. Seventeen people were arrested and an estimated P2.5 million worth of illegal drugs and 13 assorted firearms were seized.

The operation was conducted by the Regional Intelligence Division, Regional Special Operations Group, Regional Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Group, Mandaue City Police Office, Regional Public Safety Battalion and Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).

Less than 24 hours later, another estimated P2 million worth of illegal drugs were seized and six people were arrested in Barangays Ermita and Pasil in Cebu City. A notebook where the illegal drugs dealings were jotted had the word “pulis,” sparking suspicions of policemen being in the take of drug dealers.

A journey, however, can’t be accomplished by making only a few steps. It’s not that we haven’t seen the same campaign against illegal drugs or other forms of criminality before. We have. More often than not, these start well but sputter as time passes by.

Still we hope that Bañas’s initiative would end up differently from the other anti-illegal drugs campaign we have seen in the region. We also hope that it would really make a dent on the illegal drugs trade here. That will happen if the effort widens in scope and the targets go bigger.

In the meantime, we have to recognize the efforts of Bañas and the various units under the PRO7 to deliver. That Bañas dared to put the fight against the illegal drug trade at the top of his list of priorities is good enough. That the drive is off to a good start is better.
