Revilla’s ‘delusion,’ entertainers and P-Noy

-A A +A

“SELECT leaders who can continue the administration’s reform program and not those who’re good only at providing entertainment... We do not need [candidates] whose words are merely dictated by scripts, nor do we need talented dancers or fantastic singers.”
--President Aquino, June 12, 2014

IT WAS not categorical and absolute. President Aquino was not attacking entertainers as a class not fit to lead.

But he came close.

Modifiers in his statements--”good only at providing entertainment” and “merely dictated by scripts”--held him from a free fall into stereotyping.

Scrambling to repair damage, Palace boys said what P-Noy meant were entertainers who could offer nothing else but talent in dancing or singing and mouthing words from a script.

Many people who learned about his Independence Day appeal to voters believe he was referring to entertainers. His qualifiers were not red flags the public could readily spot. Editors headlined “entertainers” and didn’t highlight the kind of entertainers he wants voters to shun.

Senator-movie star Sen. Bong Revilla hyped up the event of his arrest for plunder with speech-and-song in the Senate and used it to launch his bid for the presidency.

Revilla critics say he’s being “delusional”; he doesn’t get it: people are mad over the scam and are deeply outraged.

But P-Noy must see Bong’s threat. In blasting at unqualified would-be leaders, P-Noy perhaps fears the 2010 experience when he almost lost the presidency to ex-movie actor Erap Estrada. P-Noy’s “successor” could lose to an entertainer in 2016.
