The CA hearings, de Lima’s sex videos

SEATS in Commission on Appointments (CA) are desperately coveted by members of Congress. It’s no mystery why.

Power over public officials they confirm or reject, which boost a CA member’s career and ego, can also (a) extract concessions from departments and (b) sack appointees they loathe.

That hasn’t been shown more clearly than when three Cabinet officials--DOJ’s Leila de Lima, DSWD’s Dinky Soliman and COA’s Heidi Mendoza--last week began to face the commission.

Sen. Miriam Santiago wants to block Dinky and Sen. Jinggoy Estrada would like to shut out Heidi.

And Sandra Cam, president of Whistleblowers Association, would terrorize de Lima by threatening to make public videos that purport to show the DOJ chief in illicit sex.

They’re on the warpath against the nominees, driven by motive that hardly qualifies as public good: resentment and wrath of offended gods.

Would power of scrutiny over presidential appointees, entrusted by the Constitution, be served by intense hate?

Individual selfishness may not matter if the review is confined to issues that illumine dark areas of a nominee’s competence and integrity. But it’s usually not so.

The CA can determine her fitness for the DOJ job without watching her in frenetic sex.

Screening the videos may delight her critics but must be torture to those who don’t think she looks or acts a bit like a porno star.

Just as the president can impede CA by re-appointing his nominees, CA can abuse its right by turning confirmation into a circus where it mangles people’s dignity and honor.
