Gagged 4

-A A +A

TO DATE, the hospital denies gagging baby Yohannes. But they do admit to taping a pacifier over baby Blaire. As of last count, parents of five babies have surfaced with the same experience.

Is it possible for the parents to have gagged their own baby? Of course. But seriously? Again, to what end? For monetary gain? What about the other parents with similar experiences? Are all these parents conspiring to milk the hospital for money?

On the other hand, to what end would the nurses have done this atrocious act? Well, I can think of two reasons. First, to silence a crying baby. Second, to do what might actually be common practice in the nursery.

To date, no pediatrician has had the courage to identify himself and then speak up in defense of the use of pacifiers and the practice of using surgical tape over pacifiers on newborns. Could it be because despite the fact that it is not sanctioned by the Department of Health as well as the World Health Organization, our medical practitioners actually sanction this practice?

I am beginning to suspect that the entire medical profession does NOT actually find the act of taping a pacifier into a newborn’s mouth abominable. If this is so, then, they should sign a manifesto. Have the courage to face the public and own up to your medical opinions. Still, would you do it to your own baby?

If the hospital is so confident in their stance that this practice is NOT harmful to babies, then why did they COMPLETELY deny such practice in their initial statements only to retract later and say that they actually DO practice this procedure but only selectively?

Why lie about a procedure that is supposedly above board and admit to it only when pushed to the wall? When the video of baby Blaire came out, it was only then when the hospital admitted to the practice.

And isn’t it ridiculous how the hospital continues to deny the taping of baby Yohannes while admitting to baby Blaire’s and yet both babies are taped in the SAME MANNER with THE SAME surgical tape? Wow, what are the odds?

If I am still writing about this gagging incident, it is because like many members of media and probably the public at large, I am NOT satisfied with the explanations of the hospital. The hospital has miserably failed to present a CREDIBLE explanation of what really happened to baby Yohannes.

But let me change tack. Despite the hospital’s incredible explanations and evidence of other babies in a similar situation, what if I accept the explanation of the hospital that it had no hand in the gagging of baby Yohannes? Would the hospital still be accountable for the gagging?

Of course. Regardless of the results of the inter-agency investigations, baby Yohannes was in the hospital’s custody. Cebu Puericulture Center & Maternity Hospital is ultimately responsible for Yohannes’ well-being and safety while in their care.

How could an outsider simply walk into the nursery and as the hospital alleges, tape the mouth of a baby without any of the hospital personnel knowing it? The hospital’s own allegations point to an appalling lack of due diligence as well as serious breach in security.

I rest my case.
