Mar Roxas is no P-Noy but neither is Binay

“IF you believe that we’re doing is right, please choose as your next leaders those who will sustain the reforms we’ve begun. Let’s pick worthy people who will continue the transformation we’re enjoying now.”

-- President Aquino, at the end of his May 1 speech

PRESIDENT P-NOY didn’t specify Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas as the “worthy” leader who’d continue his reforms. That would’ve been premature--and depressing: laborers were dismayed enough by the absence of incentives that other presidents routinely grant on Labor Day.

Yet many people assume the LP bet in 2016 is Roxas who dumped his own presidential dream in 2010 to give way for P-Noy.

What could derail the plan is Mar’s continued shabby showing in opinion surveys: only eight percent compared to Binay’s 40 percent in Pulse Asia’s March poll.

But focus on P-Noy’s trust in Roxas as the kind of leader who’d succeed him. Could Mar “sustain the reforms” that P-Noy begun? Is he a P-Noy, of the same mold and substance, who’d battle corruption and reject the crooked path?

In the 1988 US vice presidential debate, Lloyd Bentsen, Texas senator and Democrats’ bet, squelched Republican rival Dan Quayle’s claim he’s a Jack Kennedy: “Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy.”

If P-Noy wouldn’t give up on Roxas, would people accept Mar as another P-Noy? Not his clone but at least someone who’d be as reform-driven.

P-Noy is hardly the ideal president but poll ratings suggest most Filipinos believe his virtue of being basically honest and disregard his flaws.

On that standard alone, Roxas is no P-Noy. But then neither is Binay.
