Missing trees-A A +A
Tuesday, April 8, 2014
OFFICIALS of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 remain clueless, at least that’s how they appear to be, on the whereabouts of the 79 trees that went missing from the center island of Serging Osmena Boulevard near Cebu City’s port area.
The trees were supposed to be “earth-balled” to be replanted somewhere.
They knew who the culprits were.
Why don’t they ask the culprits who probably also knew there the missing trees are?
DENR 7 Regional Executive Director Isabelo Montejo wrote Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama to ask for a copy of the footage captured by the city government closed-circuit television (CCTV) before it files a case in the court against those responsible for the disappearance of 79 trees.
Reports said WT Construction, the contractor of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the rehabilitation of Serging Osmena Blvd., has admitted its workers were the ones who uprooted the trees.
What’s the use of the video footage?
Don’t they know that only God can make a tree, as the poet said, but only a construction company can make trees disappear?
Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, chief of the Cebu City Command Center, who first broke the news that the city’s security cameras caught on video the actual removal of the missing trees, is now hesitant to release the footage.
Mayor Mike said he is amenable to use the CCTV footage to substantiate DENR’s complaint against WT Construction Inc. upon the recommendation of Tumulak.
Tumulak said he will only recommend if there is a court order.
That’s how useful the city’s CCTV cameras are.
No, not really. Dave Tumulak simply wants DENR to do its own investigation.
