Stale bread and ‘ampaw’: on friends, would-be presidents

-A A +A

SEN. Jinggoy Estrada said all the senators are his friends: “Wala pong masamang tinatapay sa akin (No such thing as stale bread for me).”

President Aquino warned against shallow presidential aspirants whom he likened to “ampaw” (rice puffs or crispies).

Using food as metaphor, a week after Ash Wednesday--one to blast at ingratitude; the other to insult would-be presidents who’re shallow--seems unkind during Lent.

But the season opened not just with the religious mood. Politics heated up too. Major moves in the political front indicated the 2016 hunger games for power are on: Veep Jojo Binay, presidential hopeful, broke away from an alliance to form his own party while Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano said he’d run for president, joining Binay and Mar Roxas in the fray.

Jinggoy didn’t deem friends spoiled bread; instead he implied they were ingrates for dragging him down on the pork barrel issue and, earlier, voting to impeach his father, then president Erap Estrada. His “goodness” to senator pals repaid with “ambitious grandstanding.” To Jinggoy, his colleagues shouldn’t have joined the stone-throwing.

Flying back

Using “ampaw” (major product of Carcar, Cebu) for simile, P-Noy wanted to impress his audience of high school students that a president must have substance to be trusted. “Ampaw” may be delicious but minutes after, “we’re hungry again.”

P-Noy must have seen the returning missile: inevitably, some critics called him some kind of “ampaw” too.
