“Doon ay kaya kong ipunin lahat ng bituin/ Doon ay kaya kong igapos ihip ng hangin/ Doon ay kaya kong ipagbawal buhos ng ulan/ Sa panaginip lang kita mahahagkan t’wina.”
--From “Doon Lang”

I MET Jerry Yntig in my private life just as I was preparing to partly exit from my public life.

It wasn't odd that we came to know each other so late though our lines of work -- he as p.r. man and me as journalist -- interlock.

I barely socialized, which must be why JY, Globe p.r. executive, didn't bother with editors who didn't bother with p.r. executives.

Bobby Nalzaro introduced me to JY during "Tinderbox years" when our media coffee club couldn't distinguish coffee from red wine or light beer.

JY and I became friends since then, forged with the edict that each one of us paid his own bill lest outsiders might think journalists were subsidizing Globe.

JY came to provide a balance of sorts in the club's ties. Ma. Jane Paredes of Smart has been close to us since newsroom days. Thus with JY, our group became the only gig in town where Globe and Smart fellahs could be in the same room without tearing at each other's hair.

JY called me "Maestro" which, students at U.P. Cebu where I taught Media Law & Issues quipped, would make me a great musician. I shot back, giving JY the fashion guru title after he picked the "barong" I wore at the U.P. Diliman Gawad Plaridel rites.

But who could beat him in a song? He sang well: he could give top singers a run for their money. In a song like "Doon Lang," JY could soar with its joy and pain: among stars, wind and rain.
