President’s teleprompter

PRESIDENT Noynoy Aquino ditched his prepared speech and, along with it, his teleprompter, when he spoke during the 28th anniversary of the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution Tuesday morning at the Cebu Capitol grounds.

PNoy was visibly in good humor without his teleprompter.

There must be something with his teleprompter or his prepared speeches.

The anniversary of the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution was celebrated in Cebu Tuesday for the first time.

Does it mean people over the years have grown tired of celebrating a revolution along a stretch of highway called the Epifanio delos Santos Ave. (Edsa)?

With that, this peaceful revolt could now be celebrated anywhere, aside from traffic-choked Edsa.

PNoy, who spoke mostly in Tagalog save for some greetings in Cebuano-Bisaya, said he chose to hold the commemoration in Cebu because the first chapter of the fight to regain democracy started in Cebu.

Indeed, Cebu was then the bastion of the opposition against the dictatorship and served as sanctuary of his mother, the late president Corazon “Cory” Aquino, during the early days of the Edsa revolt.

But it’s also true that when you’re the first, you could be remembered at last.

The Edsa People Power Commission said in a statement the celebration of the bloodless revolt in calamity-hit areas will highlight Filipinos working together for the recovery and continued development of the country.

The decision to move celebrations away from Edsa was also to give consideration to commuters who use Edsa, which is choking with ongoing infrastructure projects.

The theme was “Kapit-bisig Tungo sa Pagbangon.” It has nothing to do with T-shirts marked “Bangon Tapulan.”
