What Karen Gimeno can’t do for Ping-A A +A

A LAWYER who specializes in banking and taxation (U.P. Diliman cum laude, 2005, and Harvard master of laws, 2011), Karen Gimeno served a high-profile role in the 2012 Corona impeachment trial.
She was the lone woman defense lawyer and one of two spokespersons who gave the Corona team pretty faces (her partner Tranquil Salvador III wowed women and gays as Karen dazzled men).
Clearly though, their articulateness, grasp of law and issues, and riveting media presence didn't abort the conviction of the chief justice.
Just as top lawyers in court can't assure acquittal, spokespersons can only do so much in spinning for their client.
One wonders now if Karen and Tranquil convinced the public. They were talking with the people whose opinion in turn must have helped influence the senator-judges.
Karen's appearance in Cebu Monday as "communications director" of former senator Ping Lacson, presidential assistant for rehabilitation and recovery (PARR), was a surprise to many who hadn't known about her new job (aside from being co-host and legal coach in two Solar TV programs and teaching in two law schools).
Ping must know he can't rely solely on Karen and a good press to do PARR's job but it helps if his messages come across, especially now, more than three months after Yolanda, and he has little to show for his work.
Karen's spiel in Cebu was mostly a confession of PARR's limited power and a slow-moving bureaucracy that disappoints super-storm victims.
At least she looked stunning when she explained, if that would console disgruntled local officials.
