Whistle-blower: a person who reports or informs on a wrongdoer; also, a snitch, rat, fink, stool, pigeon, squealer

MOST synonyms of the word "whistle-blower" don't flatter the person described or please the person whose illegal or immoral act is exposed.

The snitch betrays friendship, trust or loyalty. He abandons crime and switches sides.

What did Sen. Jinggoy Estrada say about the latest whistle-blower to surface in the pork barrel scandal: Ruby Chan Tuason who admits she was the bag-woman for Jinggoy's and Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile's cuts from the large-scale fraud?

Jinggoy said Tuason, a former family friend, just intended "to save her neck, skin and properties" in linking him to the scandal and offering herself as state witness.

Tuason may be a fink, rat, stoolie, etcetera to Jinggoy but to state prosecutors she's the dream witness, delivering what justice chief Leila de Lima calls a "slam dunk evidence." A gap in whistleblower Benhur Luy's testimony is being filled by Tuason's affidavit that she handed the money to Jinggoy and JPE.

The noose is tighter than it was when only Luy and his pals were setting up the knot.

Jinggoy told us what Tuason and other whistle-blowers are after. They want to survive.

Squealers are not exactly loved by those jailed by their disclosures. Omerta or code of silence is not just a Mafia thing. And sanctions for the "piya-et" could be as harrowing as physical violence.

Whistleblowers are mostly crime partners or accessories who turn in former co-workers as atonement or to escape punishment. They're likely to tell the truth but also they might lie.
