Sinulog and booze

HUNDREDS of thousands of local and foreign tourists are flocking to Cebu for the sinulog festivities that will be capped with the grand parade on Sunday.

Police estimates put the Sinulog crowd last year at around four million. Expect the crowd to grow even higher this year. But remember it’s only an estimate. No one was really counting the crowd. It’s simply impossible.

As my good friend Lau Rogero said, “Why count the waves in the ocean?”

The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) will deploy 2,155 policemen on Sunday along the more than five-kilometer long carousel Sinulog grand parade route.

They will be backed up by some 3,000 Reserve Officer Training Course (ROTC) cadets and 755 criminology students.

But expect problems on crowd control. As in previous Sinulog parades, it’s the crowd that controls.

The Sinulog, other than the grand parade, is also a fiesta. And like all fiestas, there will be plenty of food and booze will be flowing.

Supt. Arnel Banzon, CCPO deputy city director for administration, said drinking is OK, but if you’d be caught drunk and cause trouble in the streets, the police will put you out of harm’s way in a safe place also known as the jail.

Too much booze may earn you a free ticket to the calaboose.

A Social Weather Station (SWS) survey among executives of some 1,000 business establishments in Metro Manila and in six urban areas in the country last year said 56 percent of the respondents claimed seeing “a lot” of corruption in government.

This is a 30 percent increase from the 48 percent in 2012.

Fighting corruption is a daunting task. We might need a Hercules to clean the Augean stable.
