Who’ll police the police?

YOU must have heard the question, “Who’ll police the police?”

This is likely taken from the Latin phrase, “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?” attributed to the Roman poet Juvenal from his Satires. It literally means "Who will guard the guards themselves?"

PNP Director General Alan Purisima said they will hire private security guards to serve as sentries in Camp Crame at a cost of P21 million.

That answers the question.

Purisima’s announcement of hiring private guards to man the gates of Camp Crame, the country’s national police headquarters, drew sarcastic reactions from social media, an Inquirer report said.

“This has to be a JOKE. Why spend P21 million on guards when the PNP has the people to do it? Out of control,” one tweet said.

“They can’t protect their own?” asked another.

Of course, they can. They just got tired of standing at the gates.

Purisima said private guards would make good sentries at Camp Crame than police noncommissioned officers because of their strict adherence to the “no ID, no entry” policy.

Ha ha. Arrogant police officials could no longer use their ranks to throw their weight around.

But watch out for Makati Mayor Junjun Binay’s convoy.

He could still herd these guards to the nearest police station.

PNP Director General Purisima has the uncanny ability to make the country’s police force a laughingstock in the whole world.

If he has problems with officers bullying ordinary policemen and violating camp rules, why not dispatch them to war zones in Mindanao and elsewhere?

Terrorists have no problem with IDs. They even come in police uniforms.

God forbid policemen sent out to increase police visibility would one day return to their camps already overran by terrorists.
