Halloween costumes: ‘invitation for devil to come in’

BISHOP Francis Lucas criticizes "ghoulish and scary" Halloween costumes that are "like invitations for the devil to come in."

Lucas, speaking for Catholic Bishops Conference Episcopal Commission on Mass Media, says costumes invoke Satan's presence in an otherwise innocent activity.

Elsewhere, there have been protests against using the season's costumes for displaying prejudices: such as Hitler replica, black-face makeup, priest-molesting child act and the like.

Halloween started as a pagan ritual but became a western Christian feast and was adopted in Catholic countries as primarily a children's party. In Cebu City, there are gated villages that hold the annual trick-and-treat sorties.

How then can it involve with occult, witchcraft, or demonology? Not because of frightening stories and pranks. It may just be the props in portraying witches, ghouls, goblins, ghosts -- and demons.

Big this year is an expanded line of devil costumes sold online by www.halloweenmart, which bear tags like Seductive Devil, Prince of Darkness and Devil Delight. The names conjure demonic images, the kind Bishop Lucas is wary about.

Not insensitive

The bishop may prod parents to be more prudent in picking costumes for their kids. At least, Pinoys, young and adult, haven't been as insensitive as singer Chris Brown and pals who dressed as terrorists in 2012 or "Rock of Ages" star Julianne Hough in a "black face" costume at a Hollywood bash last Friday.

But would anyone squeal in protest if someone came in a pig's getup to a local Halloween party?
