GENERAL Manager Nigel Paul Villarete of Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) said there was no damage to the airport facilities after the 4.8 magnitude earthquake yesterday morning.

However, Villarete said that yesterday’s earthquake should serve as a reminder of Cebu’s vulnerability to disaster and the people must be cautious.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was in Buenavista, Bohol, and that it was felt in Central and Eastern Visayas, including the cities of Cebu and Mandaue.

Villarete, who is also an urban planner who once served as city planning officer of the Cebu City Government, said those who want to construct buildings must make sure their structures must be resilient against typhoons and earthquakes.

During the meeting of the agencies under the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) under the Regional Management Council (RMC), Villarete asked his members to report about the earthquake.

Jemara M. Nietes of the Office of the Transportation Security (OTS) said airport passengers calmed down easily because there was no damage.

Director Rey Elnar of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 7 said he received no reports of damage from public transportation utilities.

From the Land Transportation Office (LTO) 7, Director Arnel Tancinco said there was no report of damage in any of their offices in Central Visayas.

The Cebu Port Authority (CPA) also has no report of damage caused by the earthquake, unlike during the 7.2 magnitude earthquake on Oct. 15, 2013 when its passenger terminal in Pier 4 was destroyed.

Villarete urged all DOTC-RMC agencies to regularly conduct earthquake drills.
