BECAUSE of the growing population of the Filipino-Chinese community in Cebu, the Cebu City Public Library was encouraged to open an additional section that will provide references for Chinese history, art, culture and literature, among others.

The Chinese Corner, the newest section in the public library, aims to provide the public with a better understanding of China.

The new section was inaugurated yesterday by Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama and several officials of the Cebu Fil-Chinese community.

A memorandum of agreement was also signed by the two parties, which was also attended by Fil-Chinese students.

City Librarian Rosario Cruz said that the public library has been chosen by the Philippine National Library as one of the facilities where the additional section will be put up.

The library has general references, Filipiniana, local history, Rizaliana, browsing, children, periodical and Internet access.

Although the Chinese Corner only focused on the works of Chinese, Cruz said that everyone is allowed to browse and use it.

Consul Sun Shan, consul general of the People’s Republic of China in Cebu, said he was grateful for the government’s effort in putting up a section intended for them.

“The Fil-Chinese community has become an important component of the Filipino society,” Shan said during his speech.

It will also pave the way for a better appreciation of Chinese culture, Shan added.

Fifteen-year-old Ivan John Rabi said the section will help him, as well as other students, since the appreciation of Chinese culture is part of their curriculum.

“We will really use it because it will be useful for our Chinese classes,” he said.

Rabi, a Filipino-Chinese fourth year student of Cebu Eastern College, said that only a few Chinese references were made available to them in Cebu.
