CEBU Gov. Hilario Davide III will attend the 18th Inter-Island Tourism Policy (ITOP) Forum in Phuket, Thailand on Aug. 20 to 22.
Davide will present Cebu’s maritime tourism practices during the forum, which will be attended by officials of Phuket, Jeju in South Korea, Okinawa in Japan, Hainan in
China, Bali in Indonesia, Hawaii in USA, Canary Island in Spain, Southern Province in Sri Lanka, Zanzibar in Tanzania and Penang in Malaysia.
The governor said he also hopes to learn from the best practices in maritime tourism of other areas.
The 18th ITOP Forum will be hosted by the Phuket Provincial Government in coordination with the private sector.
The forum will focus on marine tourism, which includes scuba diving, water sport and other water recreational activities.
Forum organizers noted in the invitation to Davide that maritime tourism attracts many tourists.
Some practices resulted in the degradation of natural resources like coral reefs. “It also affects the coastal and marine ecology system,” the invitation reads.
ITOP Forum cooperating partners include Salzburg in Austria and Oulu in Finland.
Davide will leave for Thailand via Manila today.
After his official business in Phuket, the governor will have a vacation in Vietnam and will return on Aug. 27.
In a press conference, the governor explained that his vacation leave is only for a day because Aug. 23 and 24 fall on a weekend and Aug. 25 is National Heroes Day, a holiday. FMG
