LP’s Canoy to Eddiegul: Pick a side

SAN Fernando Mayor Antonio "Abe" Canoy yesterday urged former congressman Eduardo Gullas to make a stand on his political loyalty.

Canoy made this statement considering that Gullas openly announced his support for the 2016 presidential bid of Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II.

"Did Gullas consult his party, the Nacionalista Party, or ask permission from former senator Manuel Villar and Sen. Cynthia Villar that he will support Roxas?" Canoy asked.

Roxas is the president on-leave of the ruling Liberal Party (LP) while Canoy is LP Cebu's first district chair.

The first district covers the municipalities of Minglanilla, San Fernando and Sibonga; and the cities of Talisay, Naga and Carcar.

Gullas founded the Alayon Party and is a member of the Nacionalista Party (NP).

Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, an NP leader, has also announced his plans to bid for the 2016 presidency.

Canoy's theory is that Gullas openly announced his support for Roxas to politically “sideline” the San Fernando mayor.

"He is wrong because I am determined to fight him and I have the support of my party," Canoy said.

Canoy recalled that in 2010, Gullas strongly endorsed the candidacy of former senator Villar in a big gathering of students and teachers at the University of the Visayas (UV).

However, Canoy said that Gullas gathered the same crowd of UV students and teachers to endorse President Benigno Aquino III.

"The Cebuano electorate is now tired of Gullas' old political tricks and this time they want Gullas to tell them what party he belongs to. Is Gullas a member of LP or NP? Or is he riding two horses at the same time?" Canoy said.

Canoy said that if Gullas really wants to leave NP and join LP, then the former congressman needs the mayor's endorsement as the district chair.

The district endorsement will be forwarded for consideration to the LP provincial and national leadership.

Earlier, Talisay City Mayor Johnny delos Reyes said that had Canoy pushed through with his plan to run for first district congressman in the 2013 elections, he could have defeated Rep. Gerard Anthony "Samsam" Gullas (1st district, Cebu).

Canoy, for his part, said that he is definitely running for congressman in the 2016 election because that is the clamor of LP leaders and supporters so he can institute reforms in the area.

"I want to be an alternate leader in the first district especially that the people are already tired of the Gullases," Canoy added.
